Because they are simply cowards. They are afraid of not-beeing-cool-enough, of beeing confronted with feelings of them or others they cannot handle with. So they pretend these feelings don't exist, think running away would be the best option they could have chosen and don't care anymore for any feelings of anybody.
I know many girls who are worlds gutsier than guys...
